The historic centre of Guanajuato is safe for sightseeing during the day and evening; take the usual precautions and avoid lonely or badly lit places at night. All the banks in Guanajuato have exterior ATM machines that are connected to the international network, with menus in Spanish and English. When using them, exercise the same care as you would in your home town.
HEALTH
The City of Guanajuato lies at an altitude of 2000 meters (6,600 feet) and a very small percentage of people suffer some altitude sickness on arrival. In any case, do not attempt to do strenuous physical exercise until you are acclimatized. It is definitely not wise to buy food or drink in the street. You may ask at the registration desk if you feel you require a physician. In La Plaza de la Paz, in front of the Basílica there is a small hospital/clinic for emergencies and walk-in service.
